This tutorial is taken from an e-mail sent to a friend of Scott's, who sent him a piece of artwork and asked for an inking critique.

Okay, I have some time, even if not much, so I thought I would try to give you some focused advice on inking.

In general you have admirable brush control, and you taper and vary your lines well. The problem is you seem to be approaching the task as a series of separate "tactical" problems, rather than with a more global, "strategic" method. The small, individual elements of your inks are good, but when put together it looks as if the sum is less than all the parts. In short, while your handwork and skill are very good, your thinking on the subject hasn't gone very far. Here are the errors I spotted immediately on the first pass of looking over your inks. The problems basically are a lack of a unified treatment of the figure, and disagreement on where the light sources are.
