Black Butterfly Purse Front
This is the front of a purse created in early 2000. My challenge was to create an all black purse without losing the detail. My solution was to utilize negative space and the contrast of beads with various finishes. This purse is 5.5 x 7.25 and has a 1.5" gusset. The beads are embroidered on ultrasuede. For the front I used 2 needle applique to achieve the smooth lines of the flowers, vines, and butterfly wings.

Black Butterfly Purse Back
This is the back panel of the same purse. It was the first part I did. I was not sure what would happen when I started. I began doing the free form embroidery which is typical of my work. Then I created the butterfly in the center. This established the tone for the rest of the purse. I intermingled areas of free form work with the more representational butterflies and flowers. I also included sequins, vintage sequins, and small glass beads. Many of these beads are very old.
Black Butterfly Purse Side
I decided to do something a little different to attach the strap. In the last purse I did the gusset came up and folded over to the inside to create a loop for the strap to pass through. For this purse I cut the gusset several inches longer than needed on both sides and folded the extra material over the outside of the purse, then rolled it up and attached to the purse. The shape reminds me of the handles on Venetian vases. The strap is also embellished with black glass leaves.
Below are more details of the purse, including the signature which is on the interior of the front, free form embroidery, and a small butterfly from the back panel.
I enjoyed creating this purse. Please feel free to let me know what you think of it!
