SK: Skunk with Bad Back

Tiffany - you do not want to continue giving Metacam to your skunk. I
have it on very good authority that is has killed some skunks. I got
the following information from a good friend of mine that has done a lot
of research on skunks and she sent me the following information when my
skunk developed a limp which was diagnosed as the start of arthritis:

You do NOT what to give him Metacam or Meloxicam or any drug in
that family. It has killed quite a number of skunks. Their stomachs
rupture and they die a horrible death. I don't know every possible
name so verify the drug is not the same thing under a different name. I
would to try to avoid anti-	inflammatory drugs if possible because
you just never know with skunks.

I would give him MSM which is sulfur. Get any brand that says
OptiMSM on the label. I would give about 250mg with each meal. Powder or
capsule is fine. It works quickly. Bromelain is another natural
anti-inflammatory. Try to get the powder or capsule version. Read the
label and don't get one with added calcium. I would give about 250mg
to 300mg, twice per day for this also. These two are the best, the
others do not work as fast. Both are handy to have around.
Bromelain is a proteolytic enzyme that digests protein too.

I gave my skunk the OptiMSM which I obtained from VitaCost online. It
helped a great deal. I then followed it with some SynoviG3 which is a
joint supplement for dogs. They are in a compressed chew form. I give
him 1/2 chew in the AM and 1/2 in the PM. After about 2 weeks the limp
is gone and has not returned for over 3 months now. You can get the
Synovi G3 at a good price from Entirely Pets at Amazon.com. It's around
$18 for a tub of 120 chews. You could order directly from EntirelyPets
but it's almost $10 cheaper ordering from them through Amazon. They are
located in California but they're shipping speed is amazing. You should
have within 3-4 days from order

We went to the vet just as soon as we could get in.

Actually are vet was amazing and had no problems at all with Pandora.
Pandora is not good with strangers so watching the vet handle her was
amazing.

They took x-rays and discovered that she has a spinal issue, some bad
disks and arthritis in her mid-back. They prescribed a pain killer/
anti-inflammatory called metacam.

So far so good. We are putting in ramps so that she is not denied some
of her favorite spots like the couch and the bed. No stairs at all.
Stairs aggravate her back problems and quite possibly caused her back
problem. She loves going up and down the stairs and the coming down
puts a lot of pressure on her back. So... to those of you that have
stairs in your home it might be a wise idea to not let your skunk go
down them too often.

If anyone else has been through this please let me know your experience.
We love our little Pandora and hope that she lasts a lot longer. Keep
your fingers crossed for us.

THANKS!

NO!!! Please do some web research........and do NOT give it to her!
Skunks are more sensitive to medications than any animal and it has
killed many skunks!
