You and officials in your area might not be aware
of this. You should make a copy of this and keep
in your file with your immunization records.
It just could save your skunk's life.

CALIFORNIA COMPENDIUM OF RABIES CONTROL
AND PREVENTION, 2004

CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SERVICES
VETERINARY PUBLIC HEALTH SECTION
(916) 552-9740

While isolation of biting animals other than dogs, cats and ferrets is not
recommended for the reasons given above, local health officers have an
alternative to euthanizing and testing the animal in special circumstances: In the
situation where the biting animal has a comprehensive history that minimizes the
potential for rabies infection, and the risk of rabies in the biting animal is
judged by the health officer to be acceptably low, the health officer may
offer the option of instituting a prolonged (30-day) isolation of the biting
animal. Under the care of a physician, the bite victim could be started
immediately on rabies postexposure prophylaxis. This special exemption can be considered
due to the low risk for exposure, the high efficacy of rabies postexposure
treatment, and the low incidence of serious adverse reactions with that
treatment.
